World AIDS Day, held annually on 1st December since 1988, is an international day dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infection and mourning those who have died of the disease.

This year we are committed to stopping new cases of HIV and enabling people living with HIV to live healthy lives free from HIV stigma and discrimination. Forty years since the first AIDS cases were reported, HIV still threatens the world. In that time HIV/AIDS has claimed the lives of more than 36 million people worldwide and today there are nearly 38 million people living with HIV. There are approximately 3500 people living with HIV in New Zealand.

There is hope with the many advances since the times when being diagnosed with HIV was a death sentence. Now, with advances in HIV treatment someone living with HIV on effective treatment can suppress the virus to undetectable levels and maintain their health. In addition, they cannot pass on HIV. Undetectable = Untransmittable.

Recent research found only 10% of the public knew if someone is on effective treatment, they can’t pass HIV on and can expect to live a long and healthy life. Most New Zealanders (61%) would be “very uncomfortable” having a sexual relationship with someone who is living with HIV even with no risk of transmission.

World AIDS Day is the perfect time for us to share this information and raise much needed awareness about HIV. We must also continue fighting the stigma still experienced by people living with HIV. Your support can help us realise our vision of a future where HIV is no barrier to health or equality.
